‘Devil’s Hole, Jersey’

Originally the sculpture was a ship’s figurehead which was washed ashore from a wreck. An enterprising soul added arms and legs and turned the figurehead into Satan and placed him in the pool by the cliffs, known as ‘Devil’s Hole’ due to the howling and moaning made from incoming tides, given the right conditions.

As tides eroded the original wooden Satan, other figures were sculpted and the figure moved to an inland pool, instead of on the rocky, stormy shore.

Poor Satan is a bit worse for wear, these days.

Imagine trudging through the bowels of NJ and accidentally happening upon none other than this GLORIOUS STATUE OF SATAN.

“The Hermetic Triumph”
Andrew Schmidt
2012

“The Hermetic Triumph” is a sculpture that was produced after a month of alchemy research and practice. The “tablet” itself is a reference to the Emerald Tablet, said to be the foundation of alchemy and the roots of the Hermetic tradition. The front panel shows three magical languages: The Alphabet of the Magi and Theban, being medieval alchemy languages, as well as Elder Futhark which deals with esoteric magic, gods, and the elements. In the center are the symbols for the three prime elements of alchemy: salt, sulfur, and mercury. On the back panel are the four Aristotelian element symbols. Finally, at the top, it culminates into alchemical gold.

It… It’s beautiful.
